try placing a blank white sheet of paper on the top of the surface, allow it to absorb the water.
Remove it by sliding it back towards you and into a bucket or garbage can. it's a Melevsreef trick, and you can do it until it's gone.

lots of things, taking a rigid piece of cardboard and wiping across the top, vacuuming it when i do the water change, and lots of other things i have done a couple of times

also when the flow is off taking a net across the top
Even though you highjacked the OPs thread.....ill let you in on a bit of advice. That fish net wont filter out but 1000+ micron debris. Think big fish poops.

The finer the debris, the more polishing you will need.

Surface skimming greatly reduces the floating debris.

You should invest in a carbon reactor or a simple polishing filter. If a sumped system you can also reduce this further by running low micron filter socks.

It seems the lifts are not going to the top floor in this thread.

well i skim the water in different ways they do work but it just comes back in a day, i dont have a overflow but the flow on the top is a lot but it wont break it up

OK, yes, anything you do needs to be continuously operating. The film will form again if you go back to the original procedure.

do you know exactly what it is? its brown and a lot of little flakes put together to create this coating
