surfn's 50g cube tank

well, thats beyond impossible now, maybe back in january i could have done that, but i've got it on just about all of my rock.......granted, the pic above is the worst.

i've heard rabbit fish and sea hares will eat it, so those are my next steps. only prob is rabbit fish also may eat zoas. :(

i've also seen accounts of people cooking the rock for up to 6mos with this stuff, and it still came back :(

I heard that as well. that is why i dried my rocks out. hopefully it doesn't come back.

Wow great thread... sweet tank... I hope that I never get that Algea :( A buddy of mine has it and is pulling his hair out

i feel his pain :(

although, i was working on cleaning the tank yesterday, and the algae feels like its falling apart. it doesn't seem as "healthy" as it did back in june. i upped my alk and magnesium recently.....i wonder if that had anything to do with it.......or maybe its just wishful thinking. :(

when i moved, i took all the rock and scrubbed the hades out of it. so i've had it before.

i'm going to put a small naso or foxface in there soon, as soon as my LFS gets one in. i dont care if my tank is too small, this algae has GOT to go. i'll find a bigger home for the fish later. i dont care if the fish whipes out my zoas, which is why i've been trying to find local homes for my zoa frags to get a line on them...."just in case".

my small purple tang has been picking at it a little bit, but no where near taking full bites, more or less just nipping here and there.

OK so I know how to treat Hair algea... No problems so please no one try to teach me.. this story is about me being flat out LAZYYY

About 1 year ago... My Live rock curing tank had a bad hair algea out break... I also kept lots of large coral frags in this tank and it was smothering some of them.. A freind who owns a reef store front tells me about this Bacterial culture called STS or something like that (I am at work but when i go home I will look at the bottle) supposedly it doesnt hurt the corals or the fish but it destroys all algea?? well initially this does not sound like a good idea because I cure things the right way, I do not believe in short cuts... BUT the algea is not in my main tank... it is in a secondary tank so I decide to be lazy... again supposedly only storefronts can even order the stuff... I get a bottle from him and add it... it reccomends like 2 weeks OK well the bottom line is that it erased... Totally erased ALL algea in the tank... now on one hand this was great the corals were healthy... even the ones with zooanthela and the hair algea was eradicated simple and easy... the negative was that it bleached out all of the corralline remeber I said it killled all of the algea... well problem was solved and the corralling grew back in about 2 months.. My point is I wonder if this stuff would work on that nasty stuf??? could take that one really bad rock and just treat a quarantine tank with the Stuff and experiment on some new way we could use to get rid of the nasty ****... I even have about 1/3 bottle left you could experiment with ?? LMK

really!!?? hmph.......why have i never heard of this stuff before?

sounds like one of those marketable cures, like interceptor treatment for red bugs, or furan.

got any links or other information on the stuff? i want to see more anecdotal evidence before i try something rash like that.

but very interested!

Yes agreed and understood.. I will have to find the bottle when I get home... I will post the info tommorow I am working a 24 hr shift. But to just try it on one rock would be at minimum entertaining LOL a picture each day sort of thing :)

24hr shift? ouch...are you a resident or something?

If I am not mistaken the Doc is in Emergency Medicine! :D

Doc, doctor... LOL A long time ago... 20+ years I became a Paramedic, I was premed... dropped out... people started the DOC thing... then in the 90s I got a computer certification and opened a store called "Data Doctor" clients would come in and say "Is the Doctor in?" my email in the 90s became [email protected] LOL it was for the store not really even for me... email was NEW and exciteing... then in 2003 I went off to Iraq to set up red zone combat hospitals under expatriate contract with Halliburton KBR... I was an expanded scope medic... prescriptions, sutures ect anything that needed done I did for the TCNs (mostly cute little head bobbing indians) and the HCNs(the forgotten Iraqi workers at that time) they all just called me Doctor because they had nothing else... the military that I helped treat all call the Medics DOC anyway over time the name has just stuck and I have quit fighting it... I am a Paramedic and I work currently for The NATIONAL Registry service of the year 2007 :) Look it up and you will find a smiling picture of me ... JUST a Paramedic

hehe :) Firstly, I am a VERY Valuable Paramedic... Remember, I work for the #1 paramedic service in the nation. Most medics burn out in 5 years.... only the really stubborn stay longer anyway I make more $$ selling coral and wheeler dealering my various business endeavors than I do as a medic... I only work 8 days each month as a medic... Never work a Friday and get 1 week off each month, AND My wife is super smart ;) so together we do pretty much what we want $$$ wise... LOL kinda ... well not really but almost LOL .. the big tank is a big tax deduction for my reef business so it actually shelters me.

I am amazingly blessed with health and happiness :)

I hope that you did not think I was trying to sell you that bottle? LOL I will send it to you.. just for the fun of seeing if it kills this stuff off...

OK it is made by "TLC" Tender Loving Care

It is called Marine S.A.T.
supposed to be 100% live bacteria ... the bacteria eat the algea

I would never reccommend that someone use it for what it intended for... thats just LAZY and never really solves the root problem.. But as a quarrantined experiment I think it would be a blast?

It is meant for hair algea... I just always tell noobs not too look for quick cures to hair algea... The root of hair algea is excess nutrients... ie: light, detrius ect there is no quick cure in nature...no instant pill or chemical you must address the problem not the symptom BUT to test it for your problem will be interesting

oh ok......well, i dont have any coraline at all for the most part due to the move and new tank.

but i'm skeptical of using something "unatural". i've always stood by my beliefs for years not to use any kinds of chemicals in the tank or anything, and try to let "mother nature" take its course by adding a diverse set of inverts and fish.

i may decide to use this as a back up plan though, if the fish thing doesn't work out, and i get into plague proportions of this algae.
