I will apologize ahead of time if this is not easy to read but i hope i might be able to find some advice by sharing.
I've had an ongoing issue that started about 3 weeks ago. Nitrates and phosphates dropped to zero, all my coral closed up (soft & lps mainly), snails stopped moving but are still alive, hermits, pistol shrimp, emerald crab and fish are acting normally.
About a week after this I started getting brown/rust colored slime all over the glass and sand. It comes off the glass very easily and appears to form a mat on the sand but can be stirred & removed manually. Being a rookie I suspected dinos or cyano so I did some research on the forum and found the "peroxide test"

After trying the test on 2 seperate occasions I was able to determine that I did not have cyano. (No reaction to peroxide)
Currently I am observing that water changes have little/no affect in slowing the growth/regrowth of this brown slime. It seems that it does grow more during the day and dissipates overnight. Changing the amount i feed fish/coral seems not to have any affect within a 7 day period and a 3 day blackout did not seem to help either.
Now, I have not added any new sand, rock or introduced any new materials to this tank other than frag plugs w/live coral on them..
My main concern is the health of the coral- i fear i will continue to lose frags if i can't correct this soon.. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
Tank has been running for 4.5 months, 1 month of parameters and before/now pics included

BROWN SAND: CYANO, DIATOMS, DINO?
Hi all, I have had this brown sand for coming up on a year now. The 16 gallon is 8 years old and is doing great other than the sand. The sand starts white every morning and turns into a brownish orange by mid day along the front glass. I have a Kessil a160 over the tank so I do not think...
