I have a 90 gallon tank using the aqueon internal overflow and am considering changing to the synergy reef overflow or the model that @TaylorPilot is making. Is there a reliable method to seal the holes in the bottom of the tank?

You can silicone a piece of glass over the holes. Just make sure you give a lot of time for the silicone to dry. That would be my preferred method.

Or use it as a closed loop
And depends on what u are trying to do.

I think it is a world of difference. As far as noise, and the amount of real estate you gain back in the system. Ideally, you buy a tank that isn't reef ready, and you don't have to cover up the holes. But if the tank is already drilled, it is pretty easy to glue a patch plate over the holes.

I would love to do this to my tank. Definitely going to if i have to take it down for any reason.

Or place small piece of pvc with a strainer into a bulkhead so that it is an inch or so above the sand bed. Then camoflauge it. This way way you have an easy way to drain the tank from the bottom. Might even be able to use for water change???

Kind of cool thought. Problem is if that bulkhead seal leaks, you have to drain the entire tank. That would not be fun. Better off sealing it up with a piece of glass.

I've never used a closed loop system and am not familiar with how they work. Can anyone explain this to me?
