I am going to take my partial reef aquarium and switching over to a fowlr aquarium. My 6 year old wants a Humu humu trigger, a clown trigger, niger trigger and a snowflake eel. He has been very specific as to the trips to the lfs have educated his little brain on what he wants. I need some input on what can i do for a cover. They say eels usually try to escape hence the quest for a proper cover that will allow for oxygen exchange and such

can you provide some specifics of the system? You should have ample oxygen exchange from your sump, besides most covers aren't air right.

Egg crate cut to size is what a lot of folks use...glass is also an option(also a PITA IMO cause it will need to be cleaned all the time.

I have a standard 55 gallon glass tank with the center brace. Which gives it 2 openings. I have a custom built hood with my light fixture attached to it. I have a 20 gallon acrylic sump that i added baffles to make room for filter socks, protein skimmer, fuge and return pump.

If you have a true hood...I'd glue it into there above the lights.

and talking about this stuffs. (I didnt name it...)

Thought...on second thought if you have a hood....this might not really be an issue at all. How tall are we talking? From water line to clearance out?

I am a newbie so my opinion is just that a newbies opinion but looking up all those fish seem to need between 180-300 gallon tank. Are you planning on upgrading to a larger tank in the future?

I would just buy the standard glass tops for a 55g and cut it as close to your overflow as possible. I don't have any experience will eels but hear they are escape artist, I would be scared it would get through the light diffuser.

Oh NO......... not again
I would definitely plan on getting a larger tank for those fish my friend. A 55 gallon is way to small for those fish.

Seems like a teachable moment for you to explain why those fish are not appropriate with relation to size and temperament. Perhaps take your son to a public aquarium to view those fish in a more appropriate system, and explain why those fish types need larger habitats.
When I was six I wanted a monkey, thank god my mom did not indulge me.

You can also go to Liveaquaria.com and review the husbandry specifics on each of the fish types to your son, he would probably enjoy that.

I have been reading since i started the thread and realized the error in my thinking of pleasing my kid with his favorite fishes. I have to replan my strategy to keep him happy. Thank you guys

We have one of these at the store right now. Pretty cool little guy. Love the blue spots! (speaking of dwarf puffers)

I would never put a bunch of triggers in a tank. I Clown trigger by itself yes. I love clown triggers they are the best trigger fish by far. Very colorful and they are tank raised now. If your dealer buys from Quality Marine you can have a tank raised trigger fish how cool would that be.:) Triggers are very territorial and they would fight in a small 55 gallon tank.
