So from what I heard. You should never switch Salt brands from the one you currently been using. But what if you switch to a higher much better quality brand? I currently use Kent Marine. What do you guys suggest?

Where did you hear that? Many people switch salts, I switched back to instant ocean a few months ago because it keeps my perameters more stable after a waterchange then the reef crystals did.

Two different LFS said you should never switch salts. I mean it makes sense if you use dosers that are adjusted to the specific parameters. Well for Kent Marine salt,

For kent marine salt. It always puts my calcium to 450 and mag at 1250 when the specific gravity is at 1.024. So i dose to adjust those levels. But if i switch salts to something that gives me more. Wouldn't that be better? My LFS didnt think so.

I have switched salts without any issues.

Dosers are easily adjusted, Don't be afraid to try out new salts at all, when you switch just start out with small waterchanges with the new salt and make sure you test the freshly mixed salt and test after the waterchange to see where your perameters are, I personally have never heard anybody say never switch salts, People do it all the time and iv tried about 5 different salts myself.

Ya it's best to find a salt that comes close to the perameters your looking for, That's the reason I switched backed to instant ocean, Reef crystals alk was way to high and messed up my perameters everytime I did a waterchange , Now I use instant ocean and don't need to tweak my perameters as much, So yes it's a good thing to find a salt that produces the calc and alk numbers your looking for.

Oh okay good deal. ill try out instant ocean. Do you recommend that better?

It works better for me because I'm carbon dosing and trying to keep my numbers closer to natural sea levels so I don't need all that extra calcium, Alk and Mag that some of the more expensive reef salts give you, What calcium, Alk and magnesium numbers are you trying to maintain?

Imo most of the salts are good salts you just have to find which one works best for what your trying to do.

I swear by Salinity by Seachem. the polyps on my corals come out double to what other salts i have tried.

Im trying to transition to more of an SPS Dominant tank. So gradually trying to keep my calcium, Mag and Alk at the higher levels. idk at least keep it stable as much as possible.

When I first started my new tank a year ago I tried Instant Ocean Reef Crystals and I absolutely hated it. It didnt mix well/seemed to take a while to mix, and i wasnt happy with my tanks overall look. So after a 200 gallon box or reef crystals, I switched over to red sea coral pro. Nothing happened besides the fact that my corals were incredibly happy. I had great PE and shortly after switching coral coloration was way more vibrant. Switching salts won't harm your tank..

Since you're going to be switching to more SPS dominant, I'd highly recommend Red Sea Coral Pro. I've only used Instant ocean regular and reef crystals and RSCP so I can't really compare many salt mixes, but RSCP has yet to disappoint.

Where is there a bucket of Coral sea pro at for 24.99???? Thats 175 gallon

My system is an sps dominated system as Well, stability is the key for sure, Don't try to chase high numbers, There's a few big salt threads on here that you should take a look at, You will see the majority that dose 2 part just use instant ocean salt cause there's really no need to waste money on exspensive salts if your gunna be dosing anyway Lol,Since your planning on a sps dominated system that means you will be using a 2 part additive or calcium reactor eventually, If you were just going to have a mixed reef with a few sps where waterchanges is enough to keep the tank stable I would recommend getting one of the more expensive reef salts that have more calc, Alk and Mag in them, that's my opinion and btw Sanjay and Randy Holmes were a big influence on my switch back to instant ocean lol I trust anything they use to be honest lol.

I just bought this new doser named Blue Origin, for about $150 but idk how good it runs. Im going to try dosing and lets see if stable enough to start stocking up with sps. Maybe i wont need to change salt.

When I first got into salt several years ago I used instant ocean. Then after about a year I was advised to use Reef Crystals. I have recently started doing weekly water changes and my numbers are running high. Around 540 on calcium alk is also high. Might need to switch then.
