Ok so I'm switching my tank over to bear bottom. Has anyone on here done this? How slowly should I take the sand out? If I just siphoned the sand into my sump can I do more at one time? Thanks in advance

Do not siphon it into your sump as you risk crashing your tank with the chemicals released from the disturbed sand bed. Its been so long since I removed mine that I can barely remember if I just siphoned it all out at once or if i did it in stages. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that.

Grizzly, polar or black?

sorry, couldn't help myself.

I'd love to see before and after pictures. How do you keep coraline and other algae off the bottom? I assume detritus removal is just manual removal with water changes?

You forgot Panda! Bottom line, it is understood what is being done.

Any time I've done it, it has been partial removals each time. I guess you could do it all at once, but either way I'd have a bunch (at least 50%) of fresh saltwater ready just in case. You will be disturbing all those nasties in the sand, and some of that will get into the water column. Do not put it in your sump. Once you've disturbed sand, it either goes in the trash, or pulled out and completely washed....completely.

I love bare bottom! I had bare bottom before with my crate covered in purple coraline. Love the looks at that bare bottom! My wife didn't like it and she forced me to have sand bed when we upgraded the tank. She told me that she is the only one that's allow to be bare bottom in the house!

A friend of mine took all sands out at once plus make a lot of water. His mistake was he didn't have enough water to put back into the tank when he siphon all the sand out. He killed his livestock by mixing salt and water in his sump.

I like the look of a bare bottom as well. If you take all the sand out at once, make sure your rock work is stable so nothing comes apart and strikes your glass......depending on what size/style your tank is, that could cause an issue as well.

post full tank shot of the sand in the tank, these are easy to do with no cycle, need pics to plan. mainly looking at fish bioloading and overall work required to plan.

What about Koala? They are the best just saying.

Ok I will get some tank shots and discuss this more in-depth with all of you later when I plan on doing it. All the rocks were put in before sand so I think it should be all secure

I siphoned in stages. make sure you siphon top to bottom, Not layers. If you have a big (wide) enough hose you won't disturb the junk in the sand.
