Hey folks - finally huge water and salt cost has caught up to me in Los Angeles and I am switching to nsw.

i am using this thread to post my progress and experience. Also want to get feedback from those who use it and what I should be aware of.

In my experience, properly treated NSW costs pretty much the same as artificial.

Of course if you're planning on heading out on a boat and lugging home gallons of water each week, good luck.

That'll get expensive fast.

Hey guys thanks , one of my associate does this business and his cost was around a $1 a gallon with delivery so I am hoping with all maintenance etc it should be easier -+ making all the large salt mix needed for larger water change is always a thing for me so hoping this will stream line. I got a 275g tote setup for this purpose.

Anything I should know or be careful about when using nsw

Instant Ocean costs ~$0.20/gallon. In your original post you say you're doing this due to cost, and then go on to say that your associate can get you natural seawater for $1/gallon. For it to be a *break even* you'd have to be paying $0.80/gallon for water right now... Which can't possibly be the case unless you're buying it from a store.

Hmmm I use coral pro - it’s around 100 bucks for 175 gallon + water cost ( well for 35 gallon a week water change - rodi resins as well as waste water when making this amount of water) + mixing pump and electricity to heat it (which is common for all)

My economics is not even close to 20 cents :(, not to mention the work and constant husbandry it requires ( mixing ,rodi maintenance , maintenance of mixing station , etc

You want to be real slow changing over if you're switching from Coral Pro with it's very high Macro Elements to NSW which is much lower.

I'd do the change over 2-3 months maybe 5% a week.

I use both NSW and a mix (Brightwell) So in our are depending on your parameters you will have to bring up the salinity a point or two and also the DKH slightly. I just go out down the street from me at high tide and fill up some containers. If you are worried about bacteria, you can use a bleach solution to kill any bacteria and then use sodium thiosulfate to eliminate any chlorine. This is what my friend does who raises mussel spat for aqua culture. I personally do not do that, because I want all the goodies I can get. Just be aware of any rain in the past 3 days that may affect the water quality. (just don't do it). Also there are city and county web sites that will offer water quality reports in certain areas.
