Synergy Reef Overflow vs. Others

Really appreciate all the input people added to this. I thought I had researched overflow companies but it seems there are way more than I thought. I wonder why BRS only carries synergy and eshoops. Regardless, thanks everyone.

BRS carries what they say to be reliable top end products. I think that is purely subjective. You should definitely listen to the community such as this one because if you have a bunch of people going against a product that is being sold by BRS or any other vendor they are more than likely speaking from experience. Not to say anything against BRS because i love that vendor. They are reputable and their customer service is superlative. I think companies such as Synergy mean well and in their eyes they have produced a wonderful product. When you are in the business of serving people you will not be able to please everyone. I am quite sure for every person that has had a bad experience with Synergy there is someone who can attest that they do make a great product. I can't say what they make is good or bad I am just going of of what I have read. It is also unfortunate because I probably won't purchase my overflow from them because of all the negative hype I have read on the threads. Once thing we can definitely say is that when we read the threads with the complaints Synergy was there trying to support their product. That lets me know they believe in their product. It is also unfortunate that when we hobbyist spend money on products we tend to get upset if we don't get the desired output we were expecting and then we develop attitudes. This is jut my two cents. I hate to see people get bashed because Synergy seems like they have a decent product and they do communicate. I have the notion to just purchase an overflow from them so that I can have my own personal experience and judge it off of that. I might be successful. I doubt i will I am still deciding a lot of gear for my 300 gallon. I am still in the planning stages. I will keep you updated. Thanks for reading.

I have the shadow overflow and don't have any issues with it. It's dead quiet, too. I liked it enough to buy an ato container from them.

The proves my point. For every person that has had a bad experience with them there are folks that have no problems and loves the product. I think this is more of a case by case scenario.

I have no experience with reef synergy, but I am very happy with my modular marine box.

I ended up ordering a modular marine 18. I loved the removable weir design. Its in my house now, waiting for my tank to come in so I can get drilling. The modular marine came with a glass drill bit and was cheaper than the synergy. The construction is very solid, and overal impression is very good. Seems strong and well built.

Good choice.

I haven't used the new ModularMarine design but my original has worked extremely well for the past two years and change; I think you'll be pleased with the decision.

I have 125 gal I want to attach an internal overflow. Wanting ~1000 flow rate.
I'm leaning towards modular marine due to I like the idea of internal and external are same heights.

Question is wondering if I should use 800 or 1200 or 1600?
The 800 and 1200 have (2) 1" holes thru the tank with (3) 3/4" drains (uniseal drains).
The 1600 has (2) 1-1/2" holes and (3) 1" drains (bulkheads).

Any input will be helpful.

Pressure fit. And yes it’ll drain the tank down to the bulkheads

Is there a reason to ever take it off?

I have a 262 gallon tank and I have a Synergy Sump on order which holds a total volume of 77 gallons.

How do you keep your sump from overflowing when you take the weir off besides the obvious of having a massive sump?

I personally don’t ever remove mine. If the teeth ever get clogged from algae or what not, I just “scrub” the teeth and let the overflow suck it down

Yes I learned that the other day. If the weir gets clogged don't pop it off, I did and water flowed through too fast that some caused the lid to pop up and spill over.

From now on I'll just scrub a small area and wait for tank level to fall a bit then do more. No need to rush it.

I have a Syngery on my 220 and it's okay. Initially, it was really noisy but it seems to have quieted down once it got coated in bacteria. Single cast means it shouldn't leak and it's no worse than any hang on filter. I run a lot of water flow through it and its seems to do okay. The only thing that happens if the emergency drain starts working is the box on the outside of the tank pushes the lid off because it bows out too much.

I would have gone with a different brand if I could do it over...

A big selling point was that it is removeable.

So what is the point of it being removeable?
Honestly, I went with MM because they custom built a 36” internal box for me to put on my 60” tank. Not because it was removable.
