Good evening reefers,
so i have a few plumbing questions...I didn't really go to much in depth research until a few minutes before typing this.
My tank is reef ready, with two 1" drain and two 1" return. When i did the plumbing for the drain, it cut the pipe about 1/4" below the teeth of the weir. After adding the elbow, its about 3/4" in above the water level. I went trough hell to get the syphon going. My biggest issue is when i try to simulate a power outage/restore the syphon doesn't start and i am looking at a possible overflow out of the display.
My common sense is telling me its because the elbow is sitting too high and not submerged enough. That is issue #1. I don't know why the hell i glued the first elbow (in my head i said i wasn't going to cause its a drain, but got excited during the gluing. The other elbow which is a spigot is not glued)
I know i have to cut the pipe and lower it to get that syphon going. Correct?
This brings me to issue #2: If i want to have a primary and a secondary is there a particular height i need to cut these pipes height to?
Right now i have them both fully syphon and the primary (in my head i wanted it to be) is tuned with a gate valve and the secondary with a ball valve. The issue is that my secondary pulls more flow than the primary. I barely have it cracked and it pulls so much that it starts sucking air. Which leads to issue #3 and the primary
Issue#3: The flow on both of the drain pipes where good, but after i installed a roller mat, the water draining from it is not as fast as i wan't it to be. When i crack that gate valve the water backs up in the roller mat, causing the float switch to trigger the matt to turn (wasting paper).
It is supposed to be gravity fed into the sump, but i don't have enough room to change the rollers if i have it higher than the sump. So i drilled a hole in the side of the sump and plumbed it there.
Does that make a difference on the flow of the water going into sump?
With that said, i feel like the primary is the secondary and vice versa. How can i reverse that. I need
majority of the flow going through the roller mat.
Sorry for the lengthy write up.. once again, thank you all for your sharing your knowledge
