I bought a used 6x54w sunlight supply tek light elite about 6 months ago. It didn't come with the adapter plug for the cooling fans so I grabbed one that I had sitting around to use on it. The plug said 12v and 1.5 amps. I'm sure that was more than enough to power 3 80mm cooling fans. I'm wondering if its possible that it could be pushing too much power to the fans. Today I noticed none of the fans were working. I removed the fans and upon inspection the center fan appears to have melted in the center where the power supply goes to. The 2 outside fans appear to be fine.

May have just been a bad fan. Generally you shouldn't have an issue using 12vdc fans, especially not 3 of them, if anything running 3 fans on not enough power would slow them down, I don't think the supply would be to much for them.

Update:

I ordered a replacement fan for the one that melted. I plugged the fan in and then plugged in the adapter. Now the brand new fan in the center of the fixture turns right on and starts blowing air. However, the two outside fans still do not move. So I kept it plugged in and inspected the two other fans. I probably sat there messing with them for two minutes when i started smelling plastic burning. I quickly unplugged the adapter. It appeared to be undamaged but it had gotten very hot very quickly.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Fixture: Tek Light Elite T5 48" 6 lamp

Fans: Silenx Ixtrema Pro Series Quiet Fan IXP-52-14 14dBA / 1800 rpm / 24 cfm / 12v DC / RoHS

Adapter: GVE ac/dc adapter
Model: gm36-240150-1
Input: 100-240V~50/60Hz 1.0A
Output: 24V=1.5A

I'd probably replace the other two fans. I'm guessing they haven't been run in some time, and likely have corrosion preventing them from turning freely, possibly even a short.

I suppose it could be the DC power supply you had laying around, but the fact that the new fan started spinning would seem to counter the possibility.

I have the same fixture, though mine is an 8 bulb unit... the fan power supply I'm using states 12vdc @ 2 amps, it's some generic Chinese unit. I also bought my fixture used, so I have no idea if this is the factory transformer, or not.

Your adapter is putting out 24vdc, not 12v. Replace the adapoter. Those fans can't run on that volotage.
