I am in the process of purchasing a T5 setup. Does the fixture really matter? or could I use a more generic model and replace the bulbs with ATI?

I've been using a Odyssea 48" fixture over my 33L for about 2 years now. I replaced the bulbs with API right away and have 3 blue plus and 1 coral plus. I have no issues growing SPS or any coral for that matter in my tank. I'm sure the ballasts aren't the greatest but I've have zero issue with it since I got it and it was only $100, plus $80 for the API bulbs.

I'm not saying that you need a $1000 fixture but lighting is one of the biggest parts of reef keeping is it not? Stick to a good brand, and if it has active cooling it's a big plus.

I ran a fishneedit with ati bulbs and my sps was growing and coloring nicely. It's a very inexpensive fixture but bulbs make a huge difference. I am selling mine with the ati bulbs only 3 weeks old I went to a radion

The ATI Powermodule, ATI Sunpower, Tek fixtures are pretty good. They have cooling features that benefit from extended bulb life.

I was able to find a 6 bulb aquatic life fixture with ati bulbs so I should be good to go. Thanks for all the input

I have owned other fixtures but Ati is definitely the best and well worth the money in my opinion. The reflectors and active cooling of the bulbs increases par and bulb life and my corals absolutely love it. I will never buy a different brand. But I have also had good luck with other fixtures. Tek, current, aquatic life and there are others but ati definitely the best.
