I'm wanting to go with a 8 bulb t5 fixture my problem is if i mount it in the canopy it will be a pain every time i go to change bulbs so i was thinking cutting the top out of the canopy an setting it on top which will make it a lot easier to clean an change bulbs but the drawback is it sets 18 inches off the water an the tank is 27 inches deep. Is there anyone out there running there fixtures that high an still getting 100 to 150 par on the bottom of the tank?

I would try and lower it down a bit to 6-8 inches.

It is only once every 12-18 months. I would not worry too much about a once a year job being too hard.
