What type of frags should I buy To create the shelves? I know it’s called table coral but I can’t seem to find it and I’m so new to this.

Hi All - I have a large piece of Monti plate coral. It is about half the size of an 8-10 inch dinner plate. I an struggling with how and where to mount it. Currently I just have it laying on the top of some rock against the back of the tank. I will be moving and moving to a larger tank, so...

I assume you are talking about plating montiporas. There are others that make shelves too like tabling acros. I've learned to be careful with plating montis because they grow fast and will block light for anything underneath them.

The massive ones you see in Ocean documentaries are acropora.

But if you want that, buying frags is the wrong approach. You'd need to buy large colonies, and then still wait years.

I don’t necessarily agree .... though I suppose it depends on what you mean by ‘years’. In a tank conducive to acro growth, a frag will form a table in a couple of years.

Many montipora will form flat plates, but not really tables. LA sells acro pieces that state they’re of the plating variety. Otherwise it’s often just a crap shoot. I’ve a couple of pieces bought as bush acro that have tabled.

Mine all grew flat. I eventually tore this all up though to flip the rock and turn it into a eihpilia garden... i sometimes wish i didnt.. as these montis grew really fast... in 6 months it looked like this. I still have em.. but i keep it trimmed

Well sure, iw asn't talking about the time until it starrts forming a table, but about the time until it looks like a proper one
