Tailspot blenny compatible with orchid dottyback & banggai?

Hi guys,

recently i lost a firefish, she jumped through small opening of the lid. I wasn't planning to get any replacement because i was devastated.

But i also have some hair algae on the rock, so i'm thinking of getting a tailspot blenny since it's a small algae-eating fish.

The other fish i have: 2 clownfish, 1 yellow watchman goby, 1 adult male banggai cardinal, 1 orchid dottyback.
My tank: Reefer 170, (34g in display).

Do you think it will be compatible with my orchid dottyback and a male banggai?

My orchid dottyback wasn't extremely aggresive towards my firefish, he did shoo away the firefish when she got to his territory or around feeding time.
I think the reason why my firefish jumped was my male banggai cardinal. I'm fairly certain since i saw him being aggresive towards my firefish a lot of time. And i heard banggai cardinal should be peaceful..

So do you guys think i can add the tailspot blenny?

It could work but I would be cautious when doing it.

I wouldn't recommend it. The slightest change in the environment could send that dottyback into a frenzy. My dottyback lives in my sump because I moved a coral and it started attacking everything for about a week. Mine always did seem a bit OCD though.

Are you looking for something to be eating the hair algae? You could add some emerald crabs, a sea urchin or 2, and a tang. Those are well known for eating hair algae and helping to keep that under control, so I might recommend looking into that.

Except it's a 34 gallon. Definitely emeralds or urchins though

It’s only 34g so not enough swim room for even a juvenile Zebrasoma IMHO.

Old thread so I'm sure OP has made a decision... but I wouldn't rely on a TSB for hair algae removal. They're one of my favorite reef tank fish, but they're not great CUC. Mine have historically gone nuts for pellets, flakes, and frozen brine/mysis. While a few have occasionally grazed on the rocks, they haven't touched longer hair algae. Get one because you like the fish, not to make an impact on the algae.

Also, while I think you should be OK with a tailspot and orchid dotty in a 34, I'd do so with caution. Especially since the dotty was there first. They're a similar size/shape and they like the same places in the tank. The dotty will likely chase the blenny. I've had them together in a smaller tank and the blenny was there first. The dotty still chased the blenny, but the blenny had its territory and stood its ground. They eventually tolerated each other, but I wouldn't call it "peaceful."

I do have a tuxedo urchin so i think im gonna get an emerald crab.

I have a tail spot blenny, orchid dotty back and a watchman goby They all get along with each other and my other fish as well.

My tail spot blenny eats a lot of hail algae. I also just added a emerald crab and I love watching him roam around the tank. I had one before that just sat there and he died a few days after I added him. Not sure what happened there. But I have really enjoyed this emerald crab because he is so busy all day long!

Another thing with Escenius blennies, my lineatus has nipped at SPS every so often, really not reef safe IME. I’d definitely stick with what was mentioned above and get the fish because you like it!
I must’ve been tired when I posted in this thread last month, that wording isn’t great haha.

You should be fine with the dottyback. If possible, get your blenny a barnacle (blennies love barnacle caves).

My bicolor sure likes barnacles! He patrols all the rock, but always goes back to his barnacles. (Barnacles are also useful for temporarily holding frag plugs, lol)
