I have a 380g tank and I’m trying to get a good “background” where the sps I place on the back of the rocks grow tall and then the ones closer to the front grow like bushes.

Is this possible? Are there species of sps that grow tall vs out? Or are my options to just put the back row in first and let it grow and then add the others later.

Well they’re a few varieties of GSP with one of them being branching. I have the long polyp GSP variety for my back wall and the shorter (less green) polyp GSP for my landscape. The branching GSP is slower growing but also makes a good type for landscaping but not for the back wall.

Gsp scares me. It took over one of my tanks so I swore never to get it again.

I am reading that stags and stylos grow pretty tall

I have a Blue ridge coral that grew all, base ~4"x 5" and the column grew to the surface of the tank ~ 18". It's described well here!

I have given frags to friends, one left a piece out on top of his tank overnight, put it in the water in the morning and it was still alive. I have a 3" arm that is growing well laying on its side in about 5" depth ~350Par, this colony tends to grow straight up, brownish grey coloration over blue skeleton.

Look up table acros and you’re going to get acros that fit into the "bushy” category that will fit what you want for the front. Green slimer grows really fast and montipora digitata grows really fast and tall. Most birds nest end up growing like a tumble weed/round shape. I made the mistake of putting fast growers in front. And resist the temptation to place encrusting type coral on the same rocks with your acros and other slow growers

My slimer loves to base out. I'm waiting for it to do that.

I agree stags grow up a lot and do typically grow fast once established. I've seen some millipora do the same. It's like 50/50 of they will bush out or grow up and then out.

Any stag placed in the back will be your answer. Its sometimes hard to look ahead and visualize what you tank will look like in 2-3 years. Slimers, green, blue, purple, all grow big and tall.
My 120 had surf and turf, blue, purple, green, and army stags.
The army stag was a wild maricultured piece. Should have put it in the back, lol, as I had no idea what it would grow into.
Pic 1 when I got it and then grown out for 1.5 years. You can check my build as its my old 120.

Thanks for this thread got a few slimers from
Vivid aquarium and put them in the back - however there is a rookie mistake and my green slimer is in the middle of the tank - but looks gorgeous

Pics? The stags grow fast. I just picked up a rainbow stag. This is a wild stag I grew out. Started as a small finger and now. This is 1.5 years of growth. I need to frag it, lol.
