tang and fresh water dip

After losing my filefish in dd and other fish flashing I decided to pull all fish and fresh water dip and set up tanks for ttm.

So far dipped 5 fish, and only the purple tang is having a problem. He first was having difficulty swimming once I put him in the q-tank, and now he is laying on his side barely moving.

He seemed to do well in the fresh water dip but now is barely breathing. Is there anything I should do or just leave them alone and see if he makes it.

I matched the temps and salinity for the ttm tanks, matched the temp and ph for dip in rodi water.

What’s the reason for performing the Dip? Tangs commonly “play dead” during fresh water dips but you should be able to monitor them based on their breathing. They should be breathing heavily the entire time and you’ll want to remove him whenever breathing slows (It sounds like it has).

I imagine it has been removed from the FW dip by now.. How long was the tang in there/ how is it doing now?

Chase him around the tank a little with your hand. The point is to get SW moving through his gills again. Or hold the fish upright (using latex, nitrile or rubber gloves), and gently glide him through the water (to get saltwater flowing through the gills again). It is also a good idea to place the fish in an acclimation box until he appears “normal”.

ok, will try this he has been in the q-tank almost 2 hours now and just laying on the bottom of the tank, was not sure what to do. Fresh water dip was 5 min to check for flukes and then into the q-tank where he has been going down hill ever since.

Thanks guys, just went to move him around a bit and he was dead, feel sick to my stomach right now killed a perfectly good purple tang.

Sorry for your loss. Try not to feel guilty, you tried.

Sorry for your loss. You mentioned that the fish were "flashing". Chances are that the tang was heavily infected with parasites and the severe damage was already done and it would have succumbed sooner than you think. At least you tried to do the right things for all of the fish in your care.

Thanks guys I appreciate the support but I killed this poor bugger due to my inexperience.

I never let the new live rock I added to the tank sit fallow for the 76 days and only did observation with the first group of fish.

Everyone seemed to be doing well with the occasional flashing against the sand bed. But it has weighed on my mind that I did not do things properly and I may have ich or other parasites in the system. Well after adding the last 3 fish which I did ttm, prazi and observation with a black molly, I lost the filefish a couple weeks after putting in the DD.

So my thought was I have something in the DD and I should pull the fish and do a proper quarantine while leaving the tank fallow for the 76 days before I add anything else.

Anyhow, I tend to be a paranoid person and there probably isn't anything in the DD and I just killed a perfectly good Purple Tang due to my own stupidity.

Wish I could fast forward to when I have a good handle on all this and stop killing stuff.
