Tang compability

Gee like this has never been posted. But currently I have a 180 with very few fish, which is why I'm a bit apprehensive. About the only ones out swimming are a purple and naso tang, a copper banded butterfly, and a fairy wrasse. I'd love to add a power blue tang. I just upgraded from a 120 to a 180 2 weeks ago and I should have added the PB when I moved the tank over, but the purple has had 2 weeks to get territorial (as of now the naso is a wimp and let's the purple run things). Even with the bigger tank, will the fact that there is so few fish be a worry? It's not like they won't run into each other; the 3 tangs and a couple other fish will be about it. Thoughts and other tang suggestions? thanks!

I just added a gold rim tang along with my sailfin and blue and they bullied him around for a few hours and now they are all buds. You might want to get a pw that is a little larger than yours.

FWIW, I have a naso, yellow, purple, and regal all in a 180, but I have a selection of other fish too. I would say if it's possible do a little rearranging of some rock to break up territories when you add it to improve your chances. If it doesn't work, decide who stays and who goes.

I agree with this. Usually rearranging the rock around when introducing a new fish always help with a possible territorial issue. Other than that, I've got a mess of Tangs, and they all get along.

thanks for all the advice, but I'm wimping out. I've probably incorrectly figured the PB seems just a bit to aggressive. So, and jump on me if this is a bad combo, but I'm looking at adding a desjardini and a regal blue. The blue is medium/large, the desjardini is medium. My naso and purple are both medium. The regal would be the largest but the purple "should" remain the boss. When I added my naso (a tad bigger than the purple) the purple pulled out his knife until he saw the naso had one also. They scrimmaged for an hour or so but the naso just started ignoring him and all has been well. I've read of aggressive hippos but being the new kid on the block will help that, and as everyone mentioned, I can move the rock work (ugh)

IN my opinion you should be ok with the Powder blue since all the tanks are different species of tangs. in my experience issues arrive when they are of the same species or genus depending on that genus.Acanthurus are the most aggressive and it is generally advised not to mix these. it can be done though. I would then say that Zebrasoma are the 2nd most aggressive with the yellows and purples being the most dominant of this group. Ctenochaetus and Paracanthurus are typically very peacefull and then the Naso are very laid back unless they are large.

I have an Atlantic blue, Naso, Blue Hippo and Powder brown in my tank. the Brown is the newest. it was added at the same time as 5 other fish and my Atlantic blue singled it out. a mirror placed on one end of the tank did the trick for me keeping this fish occupied while the others could settle in.

I will never own another yellow tang. those SOB's are MEAN.
