Small update for anyone who’s interested;

Found out that there was 40 volts stray in the tank... it was the power strip. So, we upgraded to a heavy duty strip- and now there’s only 4 volts in the tank.

Hopefully this fixes things.

Hello- with all respect, Are you 100% that the outlet was the fix? other than it probably has a better ground. If voltage is leaking into the water, it’s gonna be from something actually touching or in the water. If you’re still reading any stray voltage in the water, you may want to turn everything off and slowly (1x1) add things until you find the culprit.(btw- 40v should have tripped the breaker, 4v probably wouldn’t)

My thought process is that there is stray volts in the air so it wasn’t that bad.

One thing that will protect you & your fish is a grounding probe in your sump but if you have stray voltage in your water don’t put the probe in until after you find and resolve it. I went thru this same process; turn everything off and make sure your voltage meter reads 0. Add things literally 1 at a time and measure the voltage- if it’s a heater, or something that may not default to “on”, make sure it is on when you measure. In my case it was my return pump; powerheads are also common culprits.

as an added note: even after you find an offender, still check the remaining items to make sure there isn’t multiple offenders

4 volts is perfectly normal. There will be some potential just due to things moving around in saltwater. If you take the leads of a meter and wave them around in water, there will be a little bit of voltage.
