Will be upgrading my 5ft reef tank soon to a 2 meter x 24 x24 inch. Currently got about 15 wrasse (fairies, flashers & a couple of leopards) and a Midas blenny.
Planning on adding 5-6 princess anthias to the new tank.
Was also thinking of adding three tangs to the mix.

Currently thinking of going for:
Aberant scopas tang
Powder blue tang
Purple tang

Don't want it to get to hectic in there and the main thing is to not upset the wrasse.....

What's people's thoughts on this?

Those 3 should be okay obviously want to add tangs together or smallest first. FYI purples can be jerks and powders are notorious ich factories (at least here in the US).

Powder blues are IMO the most aggressive tang. That said, very few so much as look at wrasse. Properly treat tangs for ich and velvet prior to adding and add them at the same time for best results.

I think that trio will work fine.

Thanks guys.
What prophylactic treatment do you recommend? I perform TTM and Prazi on the wrasse but not sure if the tangs would go like the TTM?

Copper, TTM only addresses ich. Anymore, velvet is every bit as common as ich, unfortunately. I'd treat all fish in copper or CP because if any of that makes it to your tangs it'll be game over.

Hi,

Thanks for the advise.

Stupid question time...
I understand fish can tolerate ich and on occasions develop an immune system to 'fight it off'.
I was under the impression velvet was more deadly and if infected fish needs to be treated or will likely die quickly...

Ideally I dont want to have to copper or CP the wrasses due to there delicate nature. (Some of them)

So my question is, if my wrasse have not shown any signs of disease can they still be carrying (living with) velvet?

or just not worth the risk?

Thanks
Ross

Yes, they absolutely can and likely are carrying one or the other. There are very rare fish can build an immunity to velvet before perishing. Wrasse are the most common examples. Ich is a bit easier but some fish like tangs, especially acanthurus tangs will not be able to do this in the overwhelming majority of cases.

It's a risk, I know --- my BEST advice for wrasse in copper is to let them become established in qt for as long as possible and increase copper VERY slowly over one week or more for best chances.

Halichoeres, fairy, and flasher especially.
