Tang with ich.... dang it! Help anyone

So I came home yesterday and saw my Powder Brown tang has ich... I haven’t seen ich in my tank in ten years!!!!
anyways, it’s a big reef tank, anyone ever dose a reef tank with ich? I’m looking to go down this route and not trying to catch her and spoke her.

many advice would be great!

Unfortunately, I don’t think medicating a reef tank to eradicate Ich will be possible.

Just out of curiosity, what was the last ‘wet’ item you added (coral, fish, or drop of water from another tank)?... certainly not 10 years ago?

No water.
She was added many months ago, guess my QT wasn’t long enough...

Ten years ago this happened and took a toll.... can’t remember how many fish died, but it wasn’t good. I’m hoping this doesn’t happen again and the ich fades away, but that means it will always been in the water...

Only way to remove ich is with copper and adding that to your tank is a big nono simply because your rocks will forever leach copper. If its just a FOWLR and you never plan on adding corals i guess its fine. Or you can try to remove the copper with cuprisorb but will take a while.

I guess your two choices are to ride it out, or to pull all your fish and treat them in another tank (while going fallow in your reef). Bummer. If you do pull the fish, I think the ‘low tide method’ is great if you have a tricky tank filled with lots of coral.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been doing a bare bones TTM with this baby Purple Tang... 2 gallons of salt water... move on down the line every day for 14 days, staying ahead of ammonia and Ich. (In in Florida, and I’m not even using a heater. I’m on day 11 now.)

No need to medicate. That's pointless. Feed your fish good and you'll be just fine!! Pulling all fish is a MASSIVE over reaction

I will watch them and pull them if they go south, I hope everything smooths out. I will keep this thread updated too. Hate to lose a fish to something like this...

Copper is not the only way to treat ich. If you take away the host, the ich parasite will eventually die off. The safest way is to go fallow if you want ich out of your tank or you can take a gamble and leave things as is and manage it. It’s up to you as to what plan of action you’re willing to take. Hyposalinity is also a treatment. It would require catching all of your fish, but it's pretty gentle on them after that. You might research that as well.

if they get sick they loss their appetite - impossible to feed them when they are sick, 'feed them well' never works

So from my research, and I'm in no way a expert you have a couple of options. Hypo salinity 1.016 (double check this) , copper treatment out of the tank and then going fish less for 6 weeks, Freshwater dips for 3-5 minutes to relieve the symptoms (May stress the fish a lot) and then trying to feed. Melafix and stress coat (Melafix is going to overflow those skimmers). My two clowns pulled through ich fast with Melafix and stress coat. Please double check these claims as I'm fairly new to the hobby. I hope she gets well soon. Cheers!

Yes to this. You can't add anything to a reef to treat ich that will be reef-safe.

If it’s already a well established and healthy fish I’d just see how it does for now. It will probably be fine. If it’s still a new addition you’ll probably have to treat it.

I keep dr g's anti parasitic caviar as a staple in my tank when I feed mysis. I throw a half capful in with the mysis when I feed and even if my fish have gotten ich they have fought it off with this stuff. some amazing food
