Hi I recently cycled my tank and I only have one fish so far but I’m buying some more tomorrow I got my purple tang from the lfs before they received it, it had been attacked it eats a lot when I feed it but he doesn’t like the light I have. I have a new light coming tomorrow any ideas?

It will get used to the light. Give it time. Your light is on a timer? They have habits just like we do so they will get used to the light and time it comes on and goes off.
D
Thanks right now I don’t have a reef light but I purchased one and it will be here I’m the am tomorrow with hopefully more like what they used at the lfs

You don’t mention size of tank or anything but just know that you will likely have the best success when you add easy going peaceful fish first. The laidback fish will be able to find their “home” or territory. If you add more aggressive fish first, they tend to claim the whole tank! Tangs are often aggressive. My purple tang is one of the smallest fish in my system and was added last, but I can see at feeding time how he is going to be the boss!

It’s a 55 gallon tank with a fluval 407 as my filter

I agree with above a purple tang as a first fish isn't ideal. After I added my purple I often have aggression after adding any other fish to the tank. I added a foxface earlier this week and had to leave a mirror in front of the tank to keep the purple from attacking it non stop.

Before you go to add any fish I'd look up ways to reduce aggression just in case....ps a mirror worked great for me. Of course in my case it may have helped that the fish I added was venomous.

Isn’t that too small for a tang?? I no expert but I am pretty sure almost all tangs need at least 100 gallons
It's too small but not all tangs require at least 100g IMHO. I was going to mention it but it seems like every tang thread turns into everyone complaining about the size of tank a tang is housed in.

I will add to the OP that a tang housed in a smaller tank will likely be more aggressive.

Yeah I was not trying to complain I was just trying to point out that that probably wouldn’t work long term for the fish and I know tangs that can live in smaller I just said 100 gallons because most tangs that I have read about need around that size of a tank

I honestly in no way was implying that you were, but once one person mentions too small of a tank (which I agree with you for what it's worth) it's like opening a flood gate of just people complaining about tank size. At least in this case the tank isn't ridiculously small.

Don't worry. Usually they just delete my posts. Lol
D
They didn't delete mine but in a polite, round about way they asked me to shut up. I'm guessing they didn't delete mine because I didn't really say anything wrong and I was respectful in my post.

Anyway I'm going to quit responding about this to help not derail the thread.

Yes he is still small but I need to work on finding a bigger tank if I want to keep him for a long time

I agree with you but I felt bad they had him in a 30-40 gallon with another fish or two and at least right now he is in a bigger tank and is calm
