Tangs for a 5 foot reef?

Any of the bristle tooth my preference is kole and square tail. I would go with a Square tail since it looks similar to kole
*good luck finding kole at an affordable price*
Mimic tang
Yellow
Purple
Scopas

I want to have two tangs in my 5 foot 120G reef. Is that too many? If I could keep two - would a kole & a purple be okay? :)

Since they are different species you should be fine... :)

tomini
yellow
hepatus
clown (although can be nasty)
chocolate
Chevron
lavender
kole eye

According to the current doctrine:

Kole tangs require at least 75 gallons and a 4’ tank.

Purple tangs require at least 120 gallons and a 5’ tank.

Purple tangs have a reputation for being aggressive and I don’t know how that will play out. A yellow tang is another Zebrasoma tang with a smaller tank demand (120 and 4’ tank).

Let's put our heads together and come up with a good general rule of thumb for tanks sizes for specific tangs in gallons and in feet.

Here is a list of tangs: (please let me know if I missed any)

Achilles Surgeonfish - 180g - 6 ft
Atlantic Blue Tang - 180g - 6ft
Black Tang - 80g - 4ft
Blochii Tang
Blueline Tang
Bluespine Unicornfish - 400g - 6ft
Bristletooth Tang - 80g - 4ft
Brown Tang - 125g - 5ft
Chevron Tang- 80g - 4ft
Clown Surgeonfish - 180g - 6ft
Convict Surgeonfish- 125g - 5ft
Gem Tang
Indian Mimic Surgeonfish -
Indian Ocean or Red Sea Sailfin Tang- 180g - 6ft

Lavender Tang
Mimic Surgeonfish
Naso Tang - 200g - 6ft
Orangeshoulder Surgeonfish - 180g - 6ft
Pacific Blue, Regal or Hippo Tang - 180g - 6ft
Powder Brown Tang - 125g - 5ft
Powder Blue Tang - 125g - 5ft
Purple Tang - 80g - 4ft
Sailfin Tang - 180g - 6ft
Sohal Surgeonfish - 200g - 6ft

My purple is way less aggressive than a yellow tang.

I have a 5 foot tank as well, 60" x 24" x 18"

I have a few tangs... A sailfin desjardini, a normal sailfin, a yellow tang, a gem tang, a purple tang, a Scopas tang, a blue carribean tang, an indo sailfin, a whitetail Bristletooth, 3 clowns. Tank is 6 months old

That sounds like a small tank for that many tangs. Caribbean will probably be first to get aggressive and too big.

9 tangs in a 5 foot sounds a lot... i was thinking 4 maximum

Yes that is obscene some people just don't care and imagine 8-10 years is the normal lifespan for these fish. The 2 fish you suggested will be fine in that tank. Purple gets a little large but bristletooth tang is perfect, great creatures too.
Thank you for being considerate :)
