Hey guys I'm in the market for a new tank and because of space at the moment I'm thinking of a 150 tall, 4ft long, 2ft front to back and about 30in tall. My question is how many purple or yellow tangs can fit in that setup , I currently have one purple tang at the moment he is only about 3inches. All input is welcome, thanks!

Bristle tooth and a tomini would be nice in that tank ... are you looking for just tangs as the livestock ?

Not just tangs, just thought a lillte harem of them would be nice

Is the area you are placing tank the reason for those dimensions....If not just get a 72" tank and you'll be good with more varieties like maybe a Purple and a type Bristletooth.....etc....I still would not add a Naso or a Blue to a 150...or any other of the large fast growing Tangs...they need room to cruise. I'm having a 250 built just for that reason and will have my Yellow and WTBT in there as well....

Yea its the area , just got new bamboo hardwood and I don't want the salt water near it , so I'm putting the tank in between two bookshelfs and that's the max I can put...

Well there are some smaller Tangs as mentioned above you can add....but they are long distance swimmers in the wild and really need some room to be stress free and healthy...I'm sure you'll find something suitable and awesome for your set-up! And you may already know...purples get quite large and yours is probably gonna give a beat down to anything you add....so be aware and possibly use an acclimation box.....

Even if I add them at the same time ?

I wouldn’t add any purples to an established purple in any situation, but especially in a 4’ wide tank.

You may be able to add say a yellow and a scopas, maybe a yellow and a black, but you’ll need to really be careful as that purple is likely to “put a hurt on” any tangs you add, as eloquently mentioned earlier.

I’d sump the purple while adding new tangs, if possible.

Maybe a trio but I don’t recommend trio of any one zebrasoma species. Especially with an existing purple.

I agree too that a kole or other smaller bristletooth tang would be another good addition. Occasionally, Kole and Purple will fight because they’re somewhat similar in color, be mindful of this.

I have that exact tank dimensions and it's rough when adding corals unless you have long arms, as far as tangs go I wouldn't add multiple of anything, maybe a yellow eye, flame fin tomini or chocolate tang. I only have one yellow tang in mine.

No, it’s too risky. You can mix tangs but that existing purple might do some serious damage, he has an established territory and hasn’t had to play nice with other tangs.

Cool, I bet it is hard to reach in there lol luckily I'm tall 6'3, so you think it's better to add different species of tangs instead ?

It would be a new set up and everything would be different, larger tank from my existing setup...

What is your lighting for your reef ,that's a pretty deep tank ?

I think it's better to add different tangs. I have a yellow tang, snowflake and picasso clownfish pair, 2 lyretails and a blue sapphire damsel. I had a hippo tang for 2 years and it seemed cramped so I got her moved to a friends 220. I plan to add this angel next and will probably be my last.
