Tangs vs Angels for algae

Which do a better job of eating algae Tangs or angels. Not a coral discussion just an algae eater discussion.

Tangs hands down do better job of eating algae. Angels may nibble at nori sheets but ignore macroalgaes on same clip different time. Tangs will devour all types of algae. They are herbivores and mine live up to that <wink>

IF you are asking which does a better job of controlling nuisance algae in tank - neither. Instead consider these options: You. CUC. Dose live phyto or grow macroalgae refugium for excess nitrate and/or phosphate feeding nuisance algae. UV. Vibrant. etc etc etc.

There are a lot of tangs and some are harder workers than others. I don't even think all Zebrasoma are the same. And a One Spot Foxface can keep pace with the best of them.

Orange Shoulder hands down. Spotted Kole works really hard too.

Angels are really good for when your smaller polyp (expensive) zoanthids get out of control. Algae, just meh.

I have an orange shoulder, fowleri and tomini that are nonstop picking at rock and even sand while my fatty bellus is just waiting around for the meat

Tangs.
fox face are also good,
personal fav are saltwater mollies. They will eat all algae in tanks along with.. everything you don’t want but nothing you do!

Great at eating algae. .
But they can be tricky to acclimate and keep long term at full reef salinity

Definitely tangs, especially the Ctenochaetus genus, they are equipped for scraping algae off of hard surfaces.

Dwarf angels are the only group in the family that naturally eats algae. Genicanthus are planktivores, and most 'full-size' angels eat non-algae benthic things, like sponge/coral/anemone.

I agree most tangs are better algae eaters. There are some tangs that don't eat algae (regals are planktivores), and Zebrasoma genus eats different algae than Ctenochaetus for example, so it kind of depends what you are looking for...and tank size of course.

360 gallon will have some dwarf angels and blue tang. Wasn't sure if I needed to toss in a Bristle and a yellow for algae control or if the blue plus the dwarfs would get the job done. Yes there is a refugium or will be in about a week.
