I have an opportunity to get a 9 year old 280 gallon glass tank w stand and canopy for free from my boss. The tank has been neglected for months and is a total mess. However I can see the potential. There is one caveat I see...... the tanks middle braces are broken on the same side. How important are they? Can they be repaired? Am I asking for trouble?

I don’t know about repairing them but I know they do offer support to keep the tank from bowing out.
I’m sure you could dyi something but it might be best to consult a lfs?

Very important... they help support the tank in the sense of structure. You will need to replace them.

Yes i figure they r for support and to make sure the tank does not bow out. I wonder how they can be replaced

You will just have to use a blade and cut away the silicon and either take the glass or the correct measurements to a glass manufacturer or someone that can get the glass for you (LFS) then get aquarium safe silicon and reattach it.

Let's see a picture ..... always helps to 'guide' advice. If the braces are glass and have just separated from one side - pretty easy to fix. If they are plastic (part if the trim) and actually broken - harder to fix.

Here is what i will be dealing with
