How long, do you have to wait to put fish in? Its a 20 gallon long tank

Kinda an open question. Tank must be fed then cycled to get bacteria. Your method of doing that will determine time. :)

Check out one of the cycling threads. Or buy some fishless fuel and dr Tim’s and follow the directions. You could also start putting fish food in a tank. Do you have a test kit?

Its not really about time, but about how long it takes ammonia to rise and fall, and that depends on how you cycle the tank, and there are many ways to cycle a tank. Personally speaking, just for me, I generally wait about 3-4 weeks before adding the first fish. It is important to cycle the tank first before adding fish.

Yes, fish live longer and happier lives if they are installed in a properly cycled tank, ime. Slow and cycled wins the survivor award and avoids burying fishes.

Good rule of thumb is when ammonia, nitrite test 0 and theres a little bit of nitrate. Also depends on what bottled bacteria you used

Check out on YouTube BRS 52 weeks of reefing it will walk you through all the steps. Very informative and easy to follow.
Note that the cycling segment uses Fish In cycling that may generate some very disapproving reactions from some users…

Thank you it’s been almost two years since I watched it and remember it was very informative. I don’t remember that probably because I started all with live rock.
