Hello everyone,

Wondering at what point to start over and break down my tank. It was a 75 gallon mixed reef and was my first tank. All coral but a couple zoas and a pipe organ have died. I’ve been battling Dino’s, turf algae, gha, and vermatide snails for almost a year now and slowly losing.

This was my first tank so I learned a lot of lessons from it. Just getting frustrated with how it’s turning out.

Couple cardinal and chromis, 2 clowns, orchid dotty back and a 3 inch hippo, I have a small 12 gallon freshwater tank I just broke down I was going to throw the coral into with some rock so I can try and treat everything with but I’m not sure what to do about the fish

Introduction first-I’ve been lurking a bit (quite a bit) and now decided to say hello!

I’ve had a 140 G mixed reef tank, which I broke down at the beginning of September this year due to massive, progressing majano infestation, which took over whole tank and killed most of the corals. Managed to save some Euphylia frags, large Deresa Clam and all fish.

Before I broke the tank I bought dry Marco Rock and seeded it in a large Brute container for 6 weeks or so, then I moved fish to some containers with rock from old tank and kept them for about 2 weeks there until I re-established new tank. I put saved coral frags in my quarantine tank and they survived. It has been 2 months now since new tank has been running and I re-planted frags and put Deresa back there and of course fish too. I also added some Tampa Bay life rock and Aussie life rock. I think that made a difference and things are starting to look good now.

Do not get discouraged from your mishaps, draw conclusions, analyze and plan for long future in reefing.

Okay thank you, I’ll have to try that once I get some money saved up for new rock and a couple bags of sand. I want to do a negative scape, I have a second reef tank that’s doing much better in my office, that I did a negative scape in. Should I cure the rock before I make the scape or after?

Also what would be the best way to sanitize the rock I have now. I’d like to be able to reuse it if possible in future builds.

On a side note any recommendations once I get the qt set up tomorrow for these?
I’d like to try and save the mother colony’s if I can and possibly frag as well.
I’d like to tray and remove as much algae as possible and throw one of my tuxedo urchins in to help clean the rock. Do you think there’s any saving thee zoas?
I’ll probably leave the pipe organ where it’s at for now since it seems happy.

I sanitized my rock in unscented bleach, there are some recipes on forums here. You need to rinse it thoroughly afterwards or use de-chlorinator.
If you use dry rock than you can make scape first and then cycle it in a tank, just mind that it takes few weeks to do that and your fish have to be in some other "hotel" at that time.

Got the new little set up up and running to try and clear the algae off
