So we finally moved closer to work and before we moved I decided it would be a great time to upgrade. While waiting for the new to arrive this Friday i had all my livestock in a spare tank. Tonight I came home to carnage. Two dead clams, dead sps, dead fish and anemones. The only two fish to make it were my 9 year old picassos. I'm not sure the new tank is even going to go up. If I did set up the tank does my cycle start over? I pulled the rock and put it in fresh water with heater and pump

Sorry for your loss. Any idea why everything died? Your not really giving enough info to say really. Did ypu not have a heater and pump in with the fish vorals and clams? If your rock is out of water now, than yes. Any time you move things around your probably going to have a mini cycle.

If you put the rock in fw than yes youll have to recycle. Sorry i have no insight into what happened...couldve been ammonia or a contaminate from the container...

I had heaters and pumps. My assumption is something from one of three jugs i used to move the water. I made more water and moved everything to a different tote. A few zoas and frags looked ok. We'll see. I lost a ton!

When you set up your spare tank what bio filtration did you add to it? It sounds as though you had your LR in there so I don't think lack of bio filtration is the issue but worth confirming. What did you do with any substrates, as disturbing that can also lead to ammonia spikes.

How long did it take you to do the transfer? Maybe die off on the LR lead to an ammonia spike.

I would look at the following-
Obvious water. have it tested at a trusted store to see what reading they get compared to yours
Check for stray voltage ( can come from heater or even a return pump) and also assure heater Is working
Any paint fumes or foreign matter that may have entered tank

I had my live rock in the temp tank and it was maybe 1 hour total from breakdown to set up. No sand was moved other than pulling rock. It was just a bad deal all around. Hate to see that happen to all that livestock.
