I def messed up doing maintenance and had a crazy toxin issue. Watched my entire tank close up, SPS brown out, in about 15 mins after the salinity drop. Flatworms everywhere… trying to figure out the pieces together. Did a WC and running carbon, trying to get another WC done but probably won’t be able to until tomorrow. No but it can irritate corals for a few days. You should lower your light power and sustain a few days, that lessens stresses... lower light power in all stress scenarios and work back up
Please post pictures if you don’t mind. Sry about ur situation, that’s toughI def messed up doing maintenance and had a crazy toxin issue. I lost my McCosters wrasse, and my other fish are all hiding or very skittish. Few snails are belly up as well. Last crash I had like this was ‘09 when I had a sea hare die and nuke my tank…Please post pictures if you don’t mind. Sry about ur situation, that’s tough
Got a bag in the return section and also have a reactor packed as well. Went into emergency mode real quick.Run a big bag of carbon
I just did the same thing last week. My water change resulted in 1.028 tank. Not sure why so I started scooping cups out of the tank and back filling with ATO. Took to much out and dropped to 1.025. I typically stay at 1.026. No major issues resulted.Got a bag in the return section and also have a reactor packed as well. Went into emergency mode real quick.
No as you can drop salinity quickly however it can trigger them and if they die off, they release low level toxins. To alleviate this- place high grade carbon in system to remove and keep toxins in check. Will a drop in salinity, 1.028 down to 1.025 in about 45 mins cause a stressful enough situation for red plananria to release toxin/die off?
I’ll have a better idea when lights come on, but so far, I may have done some decent damage control with running lots of carbon and doing back to back water changes. I’m sure my corals will tell me a different story in a couple weeks, but the only SPS that doesn’t look like it browned out or showing stress is my red digi. All the euphyllia are closed as normal in the morning, but my torch looks like it’s about to bail out. Couple snails belly up, but flipped them over this morning and they seem to be mobile again. How is ur tank doing now?
Man…that sucks. I’m so sorry.I’ve lost most of my fish. We’ll see how the corals do. Definitely bummed, this tank was going on 2 years and had been doing really well as of late, it found its groove.
Glad you rectified that situation, …I’ve lost most of my fish. We’ll see how the corals do. Definitely bummed, this tank was going on 2 years and had been doing really well as of late, it found its groove.
I have no firm evidence as to what caused what, it’s essentially speculation and putting it together.Glad you rectified that situation, …
maybe just useless info at this point but “usually” fish survive going from high salinity to low salinity (at least within the change you posted) ….again “usually”
….just following along and can’t help but wonder if the main cause was the toxicity/water quality issue
