i just filled my 10 gallon reef tank to be, and I was wondering when I should start testing the water to watch the cycle. I was thinking once the water cleared up from just getting setup but I'm not sure. I also don't have any rock at the moment because I can't really find any, I do have about 1 1/2 inches of Carib sea Arag-alive Bahamas ootlie sand. Any tips would be awesome. :D

Rock is a big thing to have. Sandbed is great as well but the bacteria your going to need will build up in the rock. People cycle differently. You can go buy pure ammonia, and put about half a capful for the cycle to start or put in a little food. Either way its going to cycle for at least 4 months. Once u do that, your going to want to test about a week later or even sooner if you add lice nitrifying bacteria.

Thanks :) but I'm definitely getting rock I just have to find it haha and I know a lot of people are against it but what do you think about the "bacteria in a bottle" that cycles the tank in a few days?

it doesnt really cycle it in a few days, it does get it going though and it does work. You need rock more than sand IMO. look up berlin method.

I can tell you right now, theres a decent.chunk of people who have used it. Myself included. But domt expect the tank to be cycled in a few days.

Ohh but I saw a bunch of videos and stuff where people had their tanks cycled from some products and it only took like 5 days to a week and they tested the water and it was all good, but this is my first saltwater so I honestly couldn't say :)

Yeahh I wish there was somewhere I could find some because I'd be paying over 100 dollars if I got enough rock online :(

Hmmmmm. I think Ill politely dis agree with you, and maybe save you a buck.:)

Hmm you might be right about that :) although I also did remember that dry rock is also a bunch cheaper too. But I just kinda prefer to pick the rock out myself too because I can pick out a group of pieces that I can fit together how I like, but online you don't really know exactly what you're getting. But thanks that link helped a bit :)

yea, I like rock. Good luck on the hunt.
fwiw, even if your going fowler, youll want rock to help fish stress and depending on species they need a place to hide. Folks make fun of the plastic plants and corals and bleached corals, but they are actually there to alleviate stress in the fish.

Thanks :) but yeahh I definitely wanted rock (one of my favorite parts is creating a cool aquascape) haha but for some reason it's proving to be quite harder than I originally thought, finding rock, I just wish I could Atleast find something decent haha :D
