Hello i set up a 180 gallon reef the first week of march 2018. Things are running well so far.
This is my first year back in the hobby in about 16 years. So i have 4 juvenile tangs along with about 6 other fish. Chromis, fairy wrasse ,vampire goby, diamond goby and 1 Talbot damsel. I have about 3 more tangs on my list and a couple of small fish. I am planning to order either a 8'x30"x36" 470 gallon or a 9'x30"x36" from glasscages. If i do it will be up to a year and a half before i can pull the trigger. Locally a 5'x36"x36" 355 gallon has become available for under 1/4 the price of the new tanks. I could probably swing the price within a couple weeks.

Now to get to my point whats the opinion on the larger volume of the 355 vs the added lenth of the 180 for keeping tangs. If i go with the 355, it will delay my purchase of the larger tank by 6 months or so.

Most people suggest at least a 6' wide tank for tangs, but it also depends on the tangs you are keeping. Me personally I would wait and opt for the 8 or 9 foot tank simply because at that point you will have 7 tangs and need the extra space to disperse aggression.

I wouldn't buy a 5ft tank....Oddball length when it comes to lighting, etc.....

I'd wait it out bc if you buy the 5ft....you'll be wishing for the 8 or 9ft in 2019/20

Sorta like if rich-Uncle said to me, "today I'll give you a Nissan Maxima SportsEd or if you wait a yr I'll give you a Porsche...." I'd wait the year!

.

The 8-9 ft tank is happening either way in 2020. No stopping it. The remodel for it has already happened ( solar light pods ) and electrical have been completed
