I just recently moved and redid some of my plumbing in my 120g dual overflow reef tank. It used to be super quiet but now it's obnoxiously loud. The sound is not coming from the overflow itself but from the drain water hitting the sump water. The drain hoses are submerged and in filter socks (just like my last setup) but both drains now make tons of bubbles that constantly gurgle.

Anyone know how I can shut these bubbles up?!?! I have durso pipes and a mag12 return pump.

If you had away to put a couple of gate valves on the drains it would slow the flow so you get less crashing and bubbles.

Maybe try ball valves on the down pipes or is it possible you have an air leak in your plumbing some where?

Restrcting your drain is usually not a good idea because it can lead to your tank overflowing. And there is for sure air going into the pipe because the way a durso drain pipe is built is by allowing in air to prevent a siphon in your overflow.

I think I read somewhere that I should cut the drain hose so that it is not submerges. Anyone else have advice?

Install a reverse durso if you have the small amount of space required. search for reverse durso.

OK so put a ball valve on ur return pump if u slow down the return it will slow down the overflow. Once you build up some algae on your overflows they will quite down and u could slow open the return up a bit.

You can add this to slove your issue.. This is not my tank, but he was having the same issue as you.

Hope you get the idea ;)

Bubbles in the pipe gurgle up when they hit the sump. It's just like blowing through a straw in a glass of water...

I built something on my old tank that was basically a tall piece of PVC with a T in the middle. The drain attaches to the T. One end of the PVC tower was in the sump, submerged, while the other end was above water. There was a cap on the end and a small hole drilled in the cap. This allowed the air to travel up the pipe and the water to travel down. It was 100% silent.

my current set-up was doing the same thing. dual 1" drains gurgling very loudly. if your pump moves water faster than your drains, you need an air break. i took some air line tubing and ran it down the drains until the gurgle stopped (about 6"), and cut the lines off right above water level. mine are in built in overflows so the sponge holds the lines in place. it is now very quiet, and the water seems to be flowing more consistent.
