You can drill any side that isn't tempered. I would either check with the manufacturer or try the polarized glasses and computer screen trick. I know the back of most of the larger aqueon tanks aren't tempered.

Many tanks use tempered glass on the bottoms. It allows for a thinner panel, yet is strong.

You you usally find a data sheet on the manufactuers website that tells which, if any, panel of glass is tempered on a particular aquarium.

They will also let you know that drilling their tank will void warranty.

Above 40 gallons, the bottom is almost always tempered, but the back rarely is. Google and item called a "ghost overflow". This can help your tank look nice and sharp. If you can use a ghost overflow box and put a bean animal overflow setup in it, it will be both sexy, and quiet.

Have you calculated your head pressure yet? Once you do that, just look at the flow charts for the pump you are looking at.

you can drill tempered glass, but it is really tricky...
you need a diamond top drill, that is the most important thing..

you might want to go for a larger size but that's up to you

a none impact drill
get some Play-Doh clay at a toy department in Wall Mart
a dollar store spray bottle
some thin oil, best is the liquid soldering oil

1) make an area of around the drill area like 1 to 2 inch that u want to drill with clay like a large worm... so it is on the glass like an impact area and it can contain liquid
2) fill your spray bottle with a water, oil mixture, about 1 dinner spoon of oil on the spray bottle..
3) spray in the area between the clay.. so u can use that as your lubricant to drill
4) start drilling slow... every 60 to 90 seconds u want to stop so the drill can cool down.. and so you can respray liquid to cool

this is a long and slow process, but one of the only correct ways to drill tempered glass..

You can not drill tempered. I repeat can not. It will shatter. Only drill non tempered glass. Most all standard
size tanks are tempered bottoms only unless other wise stated.

Well them saying it's tempered doesn't prove anything. There are tanks without tempered bottoms. And any tempered glass o have ever personally seen drilled has shattered. I still wouldn't advise trying to do it.

i don't advise it ether, but that does not mean its not possible.. i have done it.. its a LONG ANNOYING process. to get a small hole to fit a half inch pipe with a diamond drill, costs 35 bucks because they only had de walt, took me about 6 hours, with the breaks ... but i can tell you it is possible.. do i advise it... far from...
it gives you more of a headache then anything else.. because of the fear of breaking it in to a million pieces..

and to state tho.. before i succeeded in learning how to do it correct.. i broke at least 20 plates if not more

need diamond drill put it in a small angle like 5 degrees, stop every little progress you make... when you feel the drill and it gets like a little warm you stop..
heat on the drill is a nono..
no force... just let the drill do its job..
and make sure its consistant moisterized with an oil and water base..
use a spray bottle... like i wrote above..
