Tank Emergency - Carbon Reactor exploded in sump

.....and this just happened. Welcome back to reefing to me.

I have a 300g aquarium. About a month old.

My avast spyglass reactor....don't get me started.....blew up. Carbon everywhere. I managed to catch it before it hit the return. So the display tank is fine. I shut off valves. Emptied the sump of the water. And plan on getting it out and cleaning it tomorrow.

My question is this. Will the 6 fish I have be fine for 12-24 hours? That is about how long I will need to make the saltwater. Get it cleaned out. And hooked back up.

I have my two mp40s breaking the surface, and heater on in the display. And mp60 on the other end midway to keep circulation in the tank.

Can you use some kind of filter pads in the sump so that they catch the carbon just before it gets to the return pump? It seems like the easy and fast way to get the tank up and running again.

Its a big tank and big sump. Unfortunately no. I already emptied it out. It literally went everywhere. All in my chateau all in my marinepure blocks etc. Needs to be completely cleaned. I'm good on that part. Just worried about crashing the tank and fish.

The carbon (or the sump offline) isn't going to crash the tank. The difference is that it is in the sump vs in the reactor. Just remove it with a vac or a net if you can and you should be fine. You can just put your marine pure and chaeto in the display in the mean time.

Just a thought maybe put a small micron net on return pump so no carbon gets into the display until you can manually it all out from the rest of the sump

I've completely removed return pump for now till its all clean. Nothing got in display thankfully. Caught it before that. Tomorrow's going to be a fun day.

Most importantly did you know why your reactor blew up?

This is the first time I'm hearing that this happened

As long as it does get into pumps, remove with a fish net but no harm to tank

I have no idea. I didn't see that part happen. Just heard a noise, went to look. And there was carbon everywhere. Can tell you though I wouldn't buy the spyglass reactor again. Going to be looking at a different one. Not sure if you're familiar with it. But all that separates the carbon from the pump/water is a bouncy ball. Heh.

Yea I've never seen this reactor in person before but that sure sounds dangerous. Good thing this reactor is in sump so atleast you wont get a flood

To answer your main concern.. You'll be fine with the 2 power heads for tonight. That's not a huge amount of fish
