I turn off all flow once a week to feed coral that eats very slow. Turn off return pump the rest of the time.

I never tun my skimmer off but all my jebao hardware has feed mode and it turns them off for 10 minutes.

I find you'll feed less and avoid unnecessary nitrates by doing so. You can gage what is hitting the sand better than if it's getting blow all over.

If I'm broadcast feeding corals I turn off the return and put my vortech in sleep mode. However when I spot feed and before my vortech I would shut it all down .

A nice spot feeding technique I stole from @CastAway cut the bottom out of a bottle and use your Turkey blaster to feed your coral under the bottle.

I don't turn anything off. scattering the food gives all the fish a chance to eat. I have a couple of fish that are food hogs, and will out eat the others if given the chance.
