I came in from work yesterday and my tank looked awful. I checked the temp first and it was to almost 90. I floated ice and got it down to 80. I turned the heater off, it's still staying at 80 and that's with the heater off. I have always ran a heater to keep it at 78. With the lights off its at 80. Is it a pump causing the heat? It killed my two biggest corals a colt and frogspawn.

id definately invest in a chiller....only way to keep your tank at the right temperature

What is you house temp at if it's cool you need to put fans blowing on the water ASAP well help for sure but if your pockets can Handel a chiller get one

What kind of heater are using? and how many watts?

Sounds like it got stuck on. Being that summer time is coming, you need to keep your house cool. If you dont want to run your AC to keep the house at least 72ish, you will need to buy a chiller.

Also you might want to consider running 2 150Watt heaters instead of one 250w or 300w, so if one gets stuck on, it cant get that hot, and one quits working all together, it cant get too cold.

What type lighting are you using? I would have to agree with keeping you home cooler or invest in a chiller. Lose corals or pay a little more for electicity.

I agree with the heater issue. Can be a problem, using 2 will alleviate this issue. As the days get warmer, so does a tank, I'd not invest in a chiller unless i'd tried the use of the fans on top of the tank first, as i use. These blowing across the water surface helps with the evaporation and thus cools the tank.

So sorry to hear this ... the two heater approach sounds like the best bet. But also I think some people have Apex or similar controllers that can be programmed to alert if 'temp' get above a threshold - alert to your phone. That sounds like a good idea too especially once you start getting expensive coral or large colonies you have spent a long time cultivating (which sounds like your case).

I have a 250 watt heater. I'm really not sure what happen? I think I'm going to try 2 heaters. I have MH lamps on my tank. I'm planning on building an LED set up.

Ive got Halides on my system, I also have 4 cpu fans blowing across the surface of the water to keep it cool.

Oh, wait. Then all of a sudden you got a heat spike, even with the fans running??

I think I have, I think my heater is just gone bad. I'm gonna put 2 150w heaters in.

How are your corals recovering? I have a temp control box like those they use for refrigerators on my tank and it won't let the heater stay on. Of it gets too high it kills the power. I would recommend it if you don't want to buy a controller. I think they're like $30.

Well so far I have lost a large colt, a large frogspawn, a small hammer, neon orange plate. That's a good idea, I picked it a 150w I'm gonna go get another one today.
