I like the look of 30" tall but worry it will be difficult for maintenance like siphoning the sand. How is reaching in your tank for those of you with 30" height? Perhaps I should go down to 28".

At what height does maintenance really become more difficult in your opinion. I'm about 6ft.

I’m setting up a 28” height tank. After laying out the sand and aquascape(dry), god bless those with 30” or taller.
I’m 5’8” tall.

Do you siphon your sandbed? How often are you getting in there?

Siphoning sand would not be issue since u'll have the siphon tube length to reach sand however if u ever need to reach something at bottom of tank with ur hands, then u'd need a step ladder. I have a 93 cube w 24" height on a 30" stand and w a 4" DSB and I can just barely reach the sand. Taller tank would require a step ladder. I'm 5' 9" tall.

This partly due to height of the stand right? I am mostly concerned with the actual tank height and dont mind using a step ladder.

yes and no. If I had a 30" tall tank on this stand then I'd prob need a step ladder to work inside the tank. Which I would not enjoy. But since u dont mind using a step ladder, then the tank height to me would appear to be irrelevant? :D

As the keeper of a 36" deep tank all I can say is that there are some challenges to it. You just have to get a little creative. Siphoning the sand isn't very hard, just strap the hose to a rigid stick like object (IE. PVC pipe). For help, check out these threads, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/thoughts-on-a-tank-the-is-36”-deep.452031/, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/any-coral-grabbers.547692/#post-5643262, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/those-with-deep-tanks-how-do-you-reach-the-bottom.388020/, https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-do-you-get-to-the-bottom-of-your-30-deep-tanks.346219/ . Just a few from the past. Would I go with a deep tank again? Absolutely YES!

IMHO, I'd go a couple of inches shallower. Those last few inches of depth can make everything quite a bit harder, from cleaning corners to retrieving dropped frags. Siphoning sand bed not much harder as you'll be using a big attachment. But when you drop that little plug that always end up in a difficult to reach place, this last few inches of depth can really make life hard.

I have a 36 inch deep and my biggest issue is coraline on the bottom 6 or so inches of the tank. It’s acrylic so the algae scrapers aren’t as good at removing it. Have a heavy duty grabber and step stool for everything else. It’s a bit of a struggle trying to grab things when you’re looking from the top and can’t always see where things are. I’ve had the same issues in shorter ranks as well though.

I'm just referring to the height of the tank itself, not the height of the tank off the ground.
