The wife and I have just started talking about and looking into getting into this hobby. The spot we have that would like to put a tank is on the main level of the house (we have a ranch style home), on an interior way that faces south east. Now, there are no windows that face the tank directly and the tank can not get any direct sun light. It is also about 6 feet from the thermostat for the house.

The wife likes to keep the house at about 67 degrees at night and 69 during the day. During the summer, the house heats up to about 72 degrees.

Does all of this sound okay for setting up a SW tank? Anything in there that might be a concern... either water quality wise or even utility usage wise?

Thanks,

Keith

Hello Keith I see that you are form Springs I hope that is colorado then NICE I am down in Canon City. What you have so far sound good. I have had a tank now for 2 years and I keep my apt. about 70-75 in the winter and about 80-85 in the summer and I try to keep my tank about 78 But with colorado weather its 80 one day the the next day is 20 and snowing its a little hard to keep temp. I would get a good heater and a controller it will help out so much. I have a Reef keeper lite and I have a fan all my lights pumps and heater plunged in and it does a lot of work for me. Its nice with the fan if the tank gets to hot the fan will turn on and cool it down. you are in a good location springs has a LOT of good LFS and then there is Elite Reef up in Denver.

Hi Lsaint88,

Yep, I'm in the Springs. lol. It appears that there is a pretty good community here in southern Colorado for this hobby. Always a good thing.

My only experience with fish was a 55g tank I had in Japan. I had Freshwater Cichlids, I'm pretty much a complete newbie to this. I've not researched all of the equipment needed yet, but I have seen people mention the controller. I'll have to look more into those.

Ther is a BIG Community MASC ( MASC Forums ) is a nice place to check out. and get some books I have the complete idiot's guide to Saltwater Aquariums its has a lot of info that helped me out

You might want to choose a spot close to a lot of electrical outlets and not too much damage if it gets wet or floods. Great job doing a lot of research before getting a tank. Good luck.

Thanks for the additional info. I'll check that book out as well.

The wall were we will put a tank has a standard two plug outlet that has nothing plugged into it. With some nice surge protectors, that should be enough right?

The whole up stairs is hardwood flooring... so not excited about any flooding! LOL I guess for little spills that's a bonus though. The other thing about that spot now that you mention floods, is it is right above the stairs... so any water flowing out will end up in going into the finished basement as well.... hummm.

You should be fine. Water just seems to get everywhere. The two plug outlet will workout, but will overload quick depending on the things you add later.

Well, we were most likely going to relocate a light switch on that wall so the tank does not cover it (it's right in the middle of the wall, why do they do that?), so adding another outlet would not be too hard either.
