Hey guys,

In about a month I will be moving to a new apartment. I am starting to plan and make a list of things that will need to be done for the move. I just have a few questions that I am not sure about.

1) I was thinking about getting a two pieces of live rock from a local FS they are about 20lbs a piece and I think they have been sitting in their tank for well over a month. If I put them in the tank when moved will this likely cause a mini/new cycle? I currently have a 29G with about over 30lbs of live rock currently.

2) Will new sand also cause an issue?

3) Would it be best to set up a 10G tank to put coral in and let the display cycle if it does?

4) Also if I just make a frag tank do a need a tone of live rock in the tank if its just for corals no fish?

Thanks again,
Mike

1) As long as the rock is cycled well there shouldn't be MUCH of a cycle. Be prepared though with ammonia and nitrite tests and some additive like Prime in an emergency. I don't think it will be an issue but it's always good to be prepared.

2) Dry, unused sand is inert and shouldn't cause any cycle. It will become live over time but as long as it's new in the bag and not used before it won't cause a cycle. The bagged, wet live sand could possibly cause a cycle.

3) It wouldn't hurt to have a backup plan ready.

4) No you don't need a ton of live rock but I always use a good amount just for copepods which will feed the corals.

Thanks for the advise! Im going to set up a 10 gallon when we move and put the coral in with the fish with some live rock and let the 29G cycle if it does and check it. If everything is clear ill add in the live stock.

Thanks again.
