Hello my name is Alan and I would like to thank you for taking your time to read about my misfortune and to tell you thanks for your support. I've been in this hobby for about 5 years now. Over the past two years my tank was getting to a level I never thought I could achieve. I have been very happy and excited.
Day before yesterday I took the whole day, or 15 hrs, and changed my aquascape and trimmed back some coral and was very happy with the clean look and color of all the animals. I have Tangs, my fovoriate fish and SPS, acros, my favoriate coral all of which were doing great till I made a fatal mistake. Yes it was an honest mistake and now I'm sick because my reef is almost all gone. I have a Kalk Stirrer and the auto top off that feeds it had ran dry. I turned it on and tried to purge the line to get it to drip. Well I got busy with some other things and forgot to turn if off and before I knew it the whole tank looked like milk and the pH was at 9.99.
In a panic I made up a new batch of water and used vinegar to lower the ph and kept the tank aerated all night. I would say it was this way for 4 hrs till the pH droped to 8.5. This morning the numbers are all ok but most all my SPS have died and a few of my fish are MIA.
I understand in this hobby these things happen. It's taken me 5 years to get my 180 gallon aquarium to the level it was at and now 80% is gone. Thanks again for taking your time to read this and I wish anyone in this hobby the best of luck.
