Tank Overhang 1/4" on Stand

I would like to create a metal stand for my 30" x 20" x 12" tank (tank uses 3/8" glass) that will get skinned with 1/4" material on the front and sides.

In order to make the tank flush with the stand, I was thinking of building the metal stand slightly smaller so that there is a 1/4" overhand on the front and sides of the tank. This would mean that only a third of the glass panel will be supported by the stand (3/8" glass and 2/8" overhang).

I've read conflicting information about this (maybe the answer is more nuanced that I give it credit for). But I've seen Elos and Red Sea tank setups where there is a overhang at the front. So I don't see how my idea would be problematic, especially if the metal stand is over engineering to hold the tank's weight.

Not sure if this will change the crowd's opinions much but the dimensions of the tank in the OP was wrong. the actual dimensions are 30" x 30" x 12"

@Bulk Reef Supply I think the Vertex stand on the clown harem tank that Ryan covered used an aluminum frame that was slightly smaller than the tank itself and used the door/side panels to make everything flush. Can you speak to whether this was indeed the case and whether you guys encountered any issues?

Why not have a plywood top and have it extend the 1/4" to fully support the tank? Then have the skin fit flush under the plywood top.

I'm sure I could do that but the plywood would be seen from all sides.

Pictures of the Vertex stand that follows a similar design concept (smaller metal frame and then skin on the exterior for a clean and modern look.

How did this end up working out? I have a small 1/8-1/10 overhang I’m slightly concerned with.

I screwed an an inch thick piece of ply behind it which covers it but would prefer a full ply sheet to cover the 36”x18” space to be certain.
