I know this is a saltwater forum but my brother is into fancy freshwater goldfish, we just picked up a 40 breeder but the tank is 18 wide and the stand we have is 16 wide (its a cabinent type table)

Sorry, its not an option. You need a stand that fits the tank.

yeah dont do it. with those glass tanks the frame needs to be fully supported.
