I’m on a second story and am going to set up a 40 gallon tank, should it be okay parallel with the floor joists? It’s pretty close to a load bearing wall and an exterior wall. I know you should typically run the tank perpendicular with floor joists for weight distribution but would a tank this size be okay running with the joists?

Well its a small tank but still will weigh 480 lbs without a sump.
No other spot to put it?

40 gallon shouldn't be an issue. I have a 55g + sump running parallel to joists in my home, no issues at all.

It's only when you get into 90+ gallons that you need to start thinking about walls and floor support.
