I was recently at another LFS who was claiming to be bringing in and selling 'tank raised' Blue Tangs. I personally have not seen them on any wholesalers list.

Has anyone here heard anything about them?

I have never heard of anyone successfully breeding blue tangs in an aquarium. That would be awesome if he was though, that would be huge considering that blue tangs are one of the most popular fish offered in our hobby.

Tank raised is different than tank bred. I have heard of it before. They actually go out to the reef and collect larval forms of fish and bring them back and captive rear them. HTH

Ohh I see, thanks for clearing that up. That is still a pretty good idea. I wonder what impact on the reef that would leave. probably a lot less than normal collection procedures.

That would be cool, but I have never heard of a tang bread in an aquarium

I would think it would have to be a pretty big tank for them to be happy enough to spawn. If they get those breeded, they could raise them in a bit smaller of a tank. It would be awesome if one day they would be used to aquariums.

There was an interview with Joe Yaiullo in Coral magazine a few months back and he said that is their next goal. (collecting the larvae and rearing)

i only know of one tank where it is recorded that tangs breed regularly. it is 20,000g

I have a Blue Tang I got from a guy that got stuff shipped to him from a diver freind.
It was the tinyest thing I ever saw when I got it . He had 3 of them.He claims they just appeared one day out of the rocks in his tank.
Its now 1 1/2 inches long
