If you were buying a tank for a brand new build, what would you choose and why? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

I love my 2 year old waterbox 65.4 all in one. It’s 2 years old now and the quality is amazing.
However, I am in the process of upgrading to a 180 gallon. I am currently saving for a planet aquariums tank because they are nice, can be bought without a cabinet, I can get an external overflow, and still cost less than some options. I’m getting a really good deal on one through my LFS on a deal we worked out from another purchase. If I had the money or if something changes, I will seriously think about glass cages. I also received an email today from waterbox saying they are taking orders for custom builds now. So I am actually waiting on a quote from them too. But my guess is that it will be too much for my budget.

Given that you don’t specify the size or goals, the correct answer could be a goldfish bowl to a swimming pool.

Everyone has their own vision. In my new tank I am aiming for a mixed reef, with simple equipment. Hopefully good husbandry will see me through. Just follow your dream … and spend time on the tank I guess. Good luck.

I'm new to R2R and found your question. I have been keeping fish since 1968, changed to saltwater in 2006 with a 90 gallon glass tank. I just tore it down and am going smaller. I'm 77 years old and want easier maintenance. I have always said the best tank is the biggest you can manage. The larger it is the closer it is to self maintaining like the ocean.

My new tank is going to be a Red Sea Reefer 300G. Smaller than my old 90, easier to reach into for maintenance, Red Sea has a good reputation and most all I need is in the "kit". Still not firm on what reef rock I will use. My old tank was set up with Tonga rock. I am told one can't purchase real rock any longer. It was a month long mess to clean and rejuvenate the rock anyway. The man made rock is more environmentally friendly and saves our reefs (I think).

I use to live and work in the "Big Reef" also known as the ocean. I was in the U.S. Navy and served on nuclear submarines. Loved sitting in the sonar shack listening to the animals around us. Unfortunately, no windows but the sounds were amazing.

Good luck with finding your best tank. You will know when you find the right one for you.
