Start off by saying hello iam new to the forums and fairly new to reef keeping. Currently i dont have a tank but will be starting to buy the components over the next month-ish. I had a 30 gal tank my senior year un HS stocked with 2 oscellaris clowns, a Rose BTA, a few ricordia, live rock live sand. I worked at a local family owned pet shop in the aquarium depo so it was natural to take the leap lol. So my one year in the saltwater game is a bit out dated but im rdy to get back into it.

To make this post shorter ill get to it. My main question atm is where is a good place to purchase a NON AIO tank. I have found some but most are either glass (pushing for acrylic) or a volume i dont want. Was hopping to find a rimless with no pre drilled plumbing as i will be using a canister filter. Looking for a 30-40 gal size. I have seen custom shops but feel my order might be a waste of time for these companies due to the small size and standard cube shape.

Any advice or name drops would be very welcome thank you! And i cant wait to start this journey!!

Howdy and welcome
I think you are going to be a bit out of luck finding a mass produced acrylic small tank that is rimless. There is just not much demand.
If you are handy you can build one yourself, for not much cost. Price of a sheet of acrylic and the cutting fee, plus solvent.

So on that front then. Is there an option to get the over flow included without all the extras an AIO comes with. Building my own light system which i feel makes up a bulk of the AIO cost tbh lol

I think you might be mixing up AIO vs plug in play. AIO have the "sump" system in the back of the tank so no pluming needed but takes up tank real estate and dont come with a stand so you must get you own. where a plug and play system think (waterbox & red sea tanks ) they come with tank, stand, sump and pluming =plug and play. for more $$ you can get them with lights.

now on to your question as far as I know thee is no mass produced acrylic tank like that. have you looked in to the pro and cons of glass VS acrylic?
making your own like @lapin said would be the cheapest option but would require some research. I have though about doing that with a nano so see how it goes :D next would be glasscages I have there 240 years ago it was very light compared to glass tanks.

also not a bad idea to just get a quote from other custom builders.
FYI make sure you clean your canister often!

Welcome to the reef! Glad to have you!

We bought a 500 gallon tank that was made by Glass Cages (yes, they do acrylic!) and it was beautifully made. Granted, that was years ago but it’s worth looking into. If you decide to go glass, which is my preference, Planet Aquariums does great work for much less than Waterbox or Red Sea.

+1 for planet aquariums for glass tanks. I am not so sure about being cheaper tho? when I was shopping for my RS 750 the complet package still came under the final coast of planet.

Maybe I got a good deal at Reefapalooza. Well, I know I did. But I looked online at their website and the tank, stand and canopy were cheaper than the Red Sea. Maybe that’s because Red Sea includes the sump. But from what I’ve heard, many people don’t like the plumbing/sump configuration in the Red Sea tanks. I was still able to pick up a sump for less money. My entire set up cost less than a Red Sea set up of comparable size.

NICE!!! i have been checking them out for sure! seem like a great company.

Thank you all for so man replys and so quickly also!! I will look into all the stuff everyone said. I know the old saying canister filter = nitrate factorys but i did use one before and will a good matinance and cleaning routine i should be fine. Future larger tanks will be sumped tho! I really dont want to go heavy on any coral or fish. Just a pair of clowns is enough for me.

Hey Robert... looks like you've already received some great input. Therefore, I'll simply say, "Welcome to R2R!"

BTW - if you want to, it's usually a good idea to say hello and introduce yourself in the forum link below.

Welcome to R2R! Agree with everybody else, the main thing is do your research before you buy & have fun

Welcome to R2R!!!
I agree with several above on Planet Aquariums Tanks. I have a 100 gallon, 240 gallon, and still installing a 600 gallon all from them if that tells you how good the quality is that I keep going back to them!!!

I think a canister will be fine as long as you know that it will need to be cleaned more often. I was/am thinking of doing the same for a little nano.
good luck and post a build thread when you decide.
