So I want to do a FOWLR(fish only with live rock) tank but I'm not the best on money so here's my setup it's basic and cheap and I might change some things but I don't know.

So what I'm getting

A 64.5 gallon aquarium (costs me 500 + 150 for shipping costs)

A canister filter(might remove the biological filtration)

Water heater

Protein skimmer

Two powerheads

Maybe an overflow box

Live sand

40lbs of base rock (it says it helps with biological filtration so I think it's live rock)

Hydrometer

Water test kit for ammonia, nirite, nitrate and ph

2 Clamp on led lights with moon light

UV steralizer

And that's it if you guys have any tips to lower cost and stuff like that please tell me

Why not cut down on the equipment and run bare bones? Both of my reefs are lights, powerheads and heater only. No filters, no sump.

How many water changes do you do? And how long have you had your tank running?

My 12 Gallon Reef is 2 1/2 years old and I used to do a 30% water change each week but now I do a 30% change every two weeks.

My 75 Gallon Reef is a year old now and I do a 30% change once a month currently.

Do you test for detritus and other harmful bacteria that can be caused without mechanical filtration?

I’m not sure what a “detritus” test would be exactly but any detritus or “dirt” is sucked up and exported during the water change. My tank is no more susceptible to harmful bacteria than any other tank.
