I’m building a new home and planning a tank in the wall. I can’t decide on the dimensions. Can anyone give some advice?

I want 3 tangs, at least. Purple, yellow mimic, and chevron. Do I need a 6’ tank or will they be happy in a 5’?

Tank sizes :L x W x H
72”x36”x20”
60”x36x24”
72”x30”x24”

Or any size you would think. I’m not a big guy so a deep tank would probably be a pest to me. I am having this custom built. The overflows will be placed as a peninsula tank but it will be in the wall. I’ve never had closed Loop but that’s an option vs Sea swirls.

That is my main concern is happy fish. I have the room for a 6’ tank but I just can’t decide if 24” deep is deep enough. On the other hand I don’t know how deep I can reach to touch bottom.

Take the height of your stand in consideration to I have a 24 inch tall tank which I love but my stand is one maybe two inches two tall I have to stand on my toes to reach the sand bed and it’s a pain when a frag falls or my cleaning magnet falls

That’s a very big concern. I’ve had a 24” deep tank and a 150 gal DD tank. I hated the DD tank. It was gorgeous to see but I couldn’t reach the bottom without tongs.

Bigger is better with tangs. The only tang on your list though that would outgrow a 5 foot tank is a Chevron and it would take a while to do so. They get large, for a bristlooth tang. Some approach a foot in the wild. In captivity I’ve not witnessed this, however.

So would a 6’L x 3’W x 26”H tank work for these? I was considering a Regal Tang. Is this tank ok for them or is it going to outgrow it?

A regal tang will eventually outgrow most tanks, including a 6 footer but it’ll take a long time to get there. Their max size is closer to a foot or more and that is achieved and observed in the hobby, for what it’s worth. In fairness though, they’re also a lot more common than chevron.

I’d say any of the sizes you quoted would work with your original stocklist, short what I said about the Chevron and even that’s not a certainty I could see both sides. I typically err on the side of too much space if I have the choice, but that’s not the only consideration :)

I would like to err on that side as well. I don’t want to see a fish suffer from my selfishness. Would the Chevron still outgrow the 6’ tank?

Not likely.

We all know length matters a lot with tangs but is height as important as width
IME no, but more space is better than less. If it’s going to be difficult to maintain, if you forgo something height is what I’d ditch.

As noted, chevron gets large. Mine is pushing 7 inches after less than 3 years. An obsessive grazer too.

If I go with a 72L x 36W x 24H can I put 2 16” overflows on the end? Imagine a peninsula setup. It would give 1” on the sides and 2” in the middle. Or 1 1/2” on sides and middle. Is that structurally possible?
