Hi All,

This really seems like a dumb question, but here's what I have. I got my hands on what appears to be a custom tank and I am trying to figure out how many gallons it actually holds. Seeing that this will really say how many and what kind of fish I can purchase. When finding the gallons of a tank, are the outside measurements used or are the inside? Are the measurements taken as on TV's, where they say it is bigger than it actually is, or visa versa? Here is what my tanks dimensions are (The glass on the tank is 3/18" thick):

Exterior: L60 x W16 x H24.75", Which would come out to 102.8 gal
Interior: L59.25 x W15.25 x H24", Which would come out to 93.8 gal

Here Is the site I used to find these numbers:

The tank was probably sold as a 100 gallon tank
most probably.

Usually Tank sizes are calculated by sellers using the outer dimensions, actual total water volume will be different you need to calculate inner dimensions and subtract rock and sand, and add water volume in the sump.
for what kind of fish to add it is your personal choice I think the following will be good for 100 gallons

2 medium sized different Tangs, examples yellow tang, purple tang, Bristletooth Tangs
a pair of Genicanthus Angel of your choice
2 -3 fairy wrasses
a pair of clown fish
8 different smaller fish like gobies, a pair of cardinals, Blennies, Royal Gramma ,Dottybacks, Firefish, dartfish, and if brave enough to keep dwarf angel like flame angel or coral beauty ( dwarf angels are not 100% reef safe)

If going with 120 gallons you can add another one medium sized Tang and few more small fish.

Wow, I never thought about the space lost to glass width. Interesting stuff
